Therefore, considering the environmental impact of our work and making efforts to increase our sustainability are high priorities for us as a business and as individuals. Throughout our history we have contributed to many Landcare projects both with providing funds and volunteers to carry out works. This consideration infuses everything we do, including how and where we build our sites, the materials we use, and the products we sell in our stores. We also take a proactive approach to the future of fuels and our role in the growth and development of more sustainable energy.
Whenever we build a new site, we take care to replace any trees cut down as part of the project with land credits, enabling trees to be planted elsewhere.
All new sites have oil/water separation tanks to ensure that any oil residue is removed from water runoff before it hits storm water. We implemented this practice in 2015, prior to it becoming a legal requirement.
In store, we have made incremental adjustments like reduced plastic bags, biodegradable food packaging and utensils and an overall reduction in waste.
All sites undergo regular risk assessments and old sites are retrofitted to ensure infrastructure compliance. This includes things like replacing tanks with new, double-walled tanks, relining subterranean tanks etc. Part of our assessment process includes researching more sustainable building materials that can be used in new site builds or as part of maintenance and repair.
Endeavour Energy Fuels has a general policy of proactively replacing equipment and electricals both before end of life and with newer innovations that offer increased safety and operational efficiency. LED lighting is an example of this, being done before it became required on an industry level, because we found it reduced energy consumption.
All new sites have solar panels that feed energy back into the grid and existing sites are being retrofitted for the same. Many of our sites also use IoT sensors so we can understand how we are using power and therefore how we can be more efficient.
Historically, the fuels required have been based on fossil fuels. We recognise that this isn’t environmentally sustainable, and so we make it our business to be a part of the move towards more sustainable alternatives. We acknowledge the growth in alternative energy sources like wind, water, hydrogen and solar and want to be able to bring greener fuels to the communities in which we operate.
It is for this reason that many of our sites are built on much larger tracts of land than are strictly required: We want to ensure we have space to house a wider variety of fuels as they become viable.
We are currently looking into hydrogen fuel and wind farms. Jeff, our Managing Director is part of the Australian Hydrogen Council which aims to harness the power of Hydrogen and make it feasible for widespread use. We are also working on providing facilities for electric vehicles on our sites.
